2008 will be coolest year of the decade:This year is set to be the coolest since 2000, according to a preliminary estimate of global average temperature that is due to be released next week by the Met Office. The global average for 2008 should come in close to 14.3C, which is 0.14C below the average temperature for 2001-07.
Wait... I thought the earth was melting, and our SUV were killing Polar Bears. Now it's getting colder? Facsinating.

I want to pause here and talk about this notion of consensus, and the rise of what has been called consensus science. I regard consensus science as an extremely pernicious development that ought to be stopped cold in its tracks. Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled. Whenever you hear the consensus of scientists agrees on something or other, reach for your wallet, because you're being had.
Let's be clear: the work of science has nothing whatever to do with consensus. Consensus is the business of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right, which means that he or she has results that are verifiable by reference to the real world. In science consensus is irrelevant. What is relevant is reproducible results. The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus.
There is no such thing as consensus science. If it's consensus, it isn't science. If it's science, it isn't consensus. Period.

In the 1300's the earth got so warm orange trees were able to be grown in England.
And there were no cars and factories then. And the earth didn't melt into a big puddle.
Don't people realize that warming and cooling is a natural process?
And even most secular scientists agree that even if global warming was "real" it would only put off another ice age, or cooling period by a hundred or so years.
That's exactly right. The Earth's temperature is cyclical, it rises and falls naturally, and no amount of carbon or plastic bags is going to affect that.
