Transgendered People Protest Avatar Because None of the Characters are Transgendered - Wait, What?

No Transgender Aliens - No Avatar!
Say GLBT Activists

In December 2009, TG activists got their gender bending underwear in a twist over James Cameron's block-buster movie, Avatar. Their problem on this occasion was not that Cameron's film is transphobic. It doesn't even mention transgenders.

That was actually their problem. In what has to be the silliest protest ever planned, GLBT organizations protested 'Avatar' because it didn't have transgender aliens in its story-line. Here were their reasons - straight from the TG horses mouth:

1) To make all people aware that heterosexual arrogance, assumptions or exclusions of alternative sexualities in movies is no longer acceptable. Diversity and tolerance are human rights.

2) To speak out for all gay, bi-sexual, genderless and transgender people who are not represented by any character in Avatar.

3) To educate people about Evolution and humanity's transition to transgenderism.

Further protests, for the same stupid reason, are planned around around the Oscar ceremonies on March 10 if the movie gets nominated for an Oscar or two.

Charles Dickens didn't mention gays or transgendered people in Nicholas Nickleby, should we boycott him as well? Wait here is something, most all movies, television shows, newspaper articles, radio shows, songs, albums, internet postings and every other source of media, don't mention gays or transgendered people, let alone have characters representing them. Perhaps you should ban all media. Stupid, stupid, stupid. What a bunch of morons. This is such a classic example of taking something way too far, to the point of pure ridiculousness. Honestly, it's just stupid.

While I agree this is as dumb, silly, stupid, etc. of a protest as I've heard of in a while...

It's great that the constitution allows them to organize and protest, if they so choose. It's not un-American, it's not non-patriotic. Typically, those types of comments are used regarding political protests, but the rights are granted nonetheless, regardless of what the left tries to do to block them.

You are absolutely right about that, and you will notice I never said otherwise.

The vast majority of Transgender activists were not behind this.. in fact as far as I've heard this is essentially one person.

That said the blue aliens are really an analogy for earths indiginous peoples, and a great many of earths indiginous peoples had transgender customs and important roles. You might be surprised if you look up the two-spirit traditions of the Native Americans for example. So as an analogy of Indiginous people being invaded by an analogy of the East India Company and the like it would make sense for their to be a transgender character.. but the absence of two-spirit characters in films about Native Americans is far more of a problem.

I don't know a single transgender person who has agreed with this protest let alone been involved in it.

But do a google on two-spirit and see some of the American History thats been missing from your school lessons and cinema. Oh and look up some of the stories of brave women crossdressing and fighting on the battlefields of the civil war while your at it.

I won't be seeing it. I've had too much of the "noble savage good, evil corporation and miiltary lakeys bad" cliche, thanks.

As for the TG boycott - it's approximately as silly as anything organised by FOTF etc. i.e. Very.
