Why People are Liberal - Because It's Easy

I got to thinking the other day, why are people liberal? To a conservative their "values" seem so skewed, and so entirely unethical at times. After careful consideration, I have concluded that there are several factors that lead to a liberal ideology, including mental, moral and ethical.

First, it is easy to be liberal. If you don't want to have to think too hard about how to stand on a position, it is easy to just say, "everything is ok", "everything is equal", "there is no wrong", "all lifestyles are ok", "everyone should have everything they want", etc., etc. It is a hard thing to think logically on a topic, and come to the conclusion that some things are just plain wrong, somethings are not equal, some things are not ok, some people will have to do without for the common good, etc. Liberals call it cold hearted conservatism, conservatives call it logical, or moral.

Second, it seems cool. When you are a liberal, you have the same views as all the big Hollywood celebrities, all the major media outlets, your college professor, all the moron emo-kids at school, etc. Why not join the crowd? If you take a more controversial stand against something, i.e. Carrie Prejean, you stand the possibility of being an outcast, ostracized, harassed, etc.

Third, in many cases liberals lack religion, and in many cases they aren't religious because faith in a higher power is hard (please note this is not a blanket statement towards ALL liberals). So much of what liberals believe in takes no faith, because they rely on "scientific" backing, or discount moral implications, therefore it takes little investment of the soul, or effort. It is easy to say, being gay is great when you don't believe morals play a part, it is easy to say man came from monkeys, because you don't have to have faith in an eternal Father in Heaven, it is easy to say abortion is ok, because then you don't have to have faith that we are children of God, or that there are consequences for our actions, or that there is an afterlife where we will be held accountable for our actions.

Fourth, some liberals are narcissists, and they assume they are vastly superior in intelligence to the knuckle-dragging-conservative-slack-jawed-yokels, basing all their arguments on morals, God, the evils of capitalism, military might, etc. They believe that the liberal indoctrination their college professors spewed at them is the intelligent, more distinguished, more sophisticated view of the world. So, they go around spouting communist theory, socialist theory, relativism, agnosticism, etc.

Fifth, it is easy to let the government take care of things for you. It is easy to ask the government to provide your housing, health care, education, food, drugs, protection, moral legislation (telling you what is right/wrong), etc. It is especially easy when you have no desire to obtain or develop these things for yourself, through hard work, sacrifice, or determination. It is even easier when it is free, because you don't pay any taxes in the first place, or you don't comprehend the fact that the Government doesn't have any money, save for the money they tax from the American populous. It is little wonder people have such little care for other's property, because things gained easily are regarded lightly.

But I believe it takes an intelligent, self assured, faithful, strong person to see that there are powers outside our control. That just because we would like something to be right or moral, doesn't mean it is. That we can believe man isn't the be all, end all of existence. That sometimes people have to suffer, and it is our duty as people to take care of them, not the Government. That God didn't intend for life to be easy, that man was meant to face trials, so that he could grow in strength and character. That man has worth, and that we degrade that innate worth when we aren't accountable for ourselves, and our actions, when we don't learn to take care of ourselves, and those we are responsible for. I believe that God knows far more than any man, including the greatest political leaders of any day or age. I believe that you know what is best for you and your family, not someone a thousand miles away in a smoke filled room. I believe that this country was founded on the idea of personal liberty and freedom, a life free from tyranny, and government interference, free from a central power telling us what is moral, and forcing us to accept it.

There is use for the government, they are meant to protect us from foreign and domestic threats. They have use in creating and maintaining infrastructure vital to the health of the nation. They have use in outlawing acts or otherwise that pose threat to American citizens, like abortion. They have use in facilitating trade, and economic wealth. They have use in ways that help the Americans, but they should have no part in anything that forces undue intrusion or control into or on our lives.

I believe it is hard to be a conservative, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Agreed, faith is hard and so is standing up for what you believe even when it's not popular.

It's hard to be a conservative, because your ideals are idiotic. You're a pot calling the liberal kettle black.

Government cannot protect you from domestic threats. Your constitution protected white slave owners and ignored the rights of their slaves.

Your government is based on the premise that it's ok to have slaves. Which is why it has mandatory violent taxation for roads, mail, police, military etc.

You are to stupid to see that the government does not solve problems it creates them.

There is no such thing as a good government.

Evil is not necessary, but you will support kidnapping and caging anyone that does not support it financially.

Here is a tax plan: there are no taxes society should be civilized and not rely on violence for donations.

it's hard to say that all earthly problems will be solved by either the apocalypse or some figment in the sky? C'mon... Most liberals actually agree that people should work for their money, but the system that has been set up by the rich old boys club is one in which certain people have no chance at moving forward, while fat white rich people keep their buddies in power (i.e. cheating the poor and uneducated out of opportunity). I agree with a lot of right wing economical ideals, however, we live in a society, and in such a society it makes sense to help out the people in need of such help instead of stepping on them. Why not help them so that we can all benefit?

Danumlaw,

I never said we shouldn't help out the poor. In fact I said: "That sometimes people have to suffer, and it is our duty as people to take care of them, not the Government. That God didn't intend for life to be easy, that man was meant to face trials, so that he could grow in strength and character."

"It's hard to be a conservative, because your ideals are idiotic. You're a pot calling the liberal kettle black."

It's hard to take name calling as serious debate, so I'll ignore this, until proof of the idiocy is provided.

"Government cannot protect you from domestic threats. Your constitution protected white slave owners and ignored the rights of their slaves."

That same government liberated those slaves. A democracy, led by good people, will correct it's mistakes. After so long, using slavery as the excuse for so many of today's problems becomes absurd.

"Your government is based on the premise that it's ok to have slaves. Which is why it has mandatory violent taxation for roads, mail, police, military etc."

Violent taxation? How so? The taxation for roads and police is primarily local, not federal. Taxation for the military is fine, because it is a constitutional duty of the federal government. As far as mail, I think it is a monopoly and should be replaced with private enterprise.

"You are to stupid to see that the government does not solve problems it creates them."

My whole argument is that big government is bad. Of course it creates problems, that is why conservatives argue for smaller government. You call me stupid, yet you fail to grasp the underlying premise of my argument.

"There is no such thing as a good government."

Perhaps, but there is such a thing as good people, and a representative democracy is as close to the peoples rule as possible, while still maintaining a level of society necessary to remain viable.

"Evil is not necessary, but you will support kidnapping and caging anyone that does not support it financially."

What the heck does this mean? What an unfounded, unapplied argument. I have no idea what you are talking about.

"Here is a tax plan: there are no taxes society should be civilized and not rely on violence for donations."

I agree with that tax plan.

"Roadkill", where are you from? You make it sound like you're not from America. I sincerely want to know. It is always interesting to get a different perspective from a person living outside our great country looking in.

"Danumlaw", the system set up by the rich old boys club to hold down the untalented/uneducated people (as you refer to it) is called capitalism, and it has been hugely liberalized in the past 30 years. 50 years ago no woman would be in executive positions. 50 years ago higher education (including medical and law school) was dominated by men, now the classes are split 50/50. In my class the woman outnumber the men 51/49. Also, in my class there are a large number of minorities. However, the minorities did not have nearly the admission scores or GPA that the "whites" had. In fact, in many cases the individuals were accepted specifically for their minority status to the exclusion of other highly qualified white people. Many businesses must hire a certain number of minorities and women by law. These programs give women and minorities a HUGE boost over other white males. You made the statement that "the system that has been set up by the rich old boys club is one in which certain people have no chance at moving forward," I think your statement applies more to white people these days than to women and minorities. The racism that our society has fought against for so long has actually become racism against whites and a benefit to women and minorities.

Capitalism is set up to benefit those who work hard, sacrifice, and prepare for the future. Capitalism is like a sporting event, those who work hard and prepare generally win (not always though, just like in capitalism). In a capitalist society, those with more education WILL make more money. That's how it is set up. Unfortunately, there are people who view the system as unfair and biased. But those people are typically slothful, lazy, uneducated people who don't want to jump through all those hoops to get the same thing as all those hard working people. It would be much easier to simply change the rules to benefit the lazy people. Which is what many liberals preach.

But alas, we still live in a society where the hard working, educated people make more money and are more successful than any other person. So why don't we stop whining, work hard, and get an education? That would solve our problems.

I move to NH as part of the free state project.

I am an anarchist.

Conservatives want violent mandatory taxation for roads and guns (military). (conservatives think the government is a "necessary evil")

Federal highways are made and maintained via federal taxes there are local roads that are made and maintained with federal taxes. ("click it or ticket" is a federal program, if your state makes it illegal to drive without a seatbelt you get money from the feds. NH has rejected this idiotic idea)

@notoriously Conservative
"Taxation for the military is fine, because it is a constitutional duty of the federal government."

You think it's ok to kidnap and cage people that don't want to pay for wars in Iraq and Pakistan. Taxation for the military is not fine.

This is the problem with conservatives they think that just because the constitution says the government can do something that it is ok to use violence against people that don't want to pay for depleted uranium bullets and computerized flying drones. Send anyone that does not pay taxes to prison, if they resist or try to escape shoot them.

You are arguing for government and violence against peaceful people to get the things YOU want from society: Roads, military etc.

"Perhaps, but there is such a thing as good people, and a representative democracy is as close to the peoples rule as possible, while still maintaining a level of society necessary to remain viable."

represenative democracy is immoral. It gives the the majority a monopoly on violence to force people to finance evil things.

Government will always create more evil than good. There is no reason for it.

Stop supporting evil. Stop supporting a system that is violent by design.

Stop supporting the system setup by "the rich old boys club" and the liberals won't want to use your government (the rich old boys club) to provide them with healthcare. Because your rich old boys club will no longer be able to rig the system.

If you are interested in real freedom and liberty instead of your conservative bullshit then you cannot support the government.

See: freekeene.com if you are interested in where I am coming from.

I have a question for roadkill; Where exactly do you plan to set up this anarchist utopia you have outlined. I would be curios to know how you plan to secure your rights and property in the absence of a federal government and a military. Is it that you believe that no other country, dictator or despot would move in to fill the vacuum left when our government colapses? Maybe you think the rest of the world will just leave you alone and play nice. What a naive world view. I am no fan of government but I sure like being able to walk outside without the fear of foreign invaders shooting me like a dog in the street.

@Silent_Majority

Keene, New Hampshire (see: www.freekeene.com and http://www.freestateproject.org) Is were we are setting this up.

You sound no different than a liberal. They want government to provide healthcare to them. YOU want the government to provide an army for you.

You are a hypocrite if you think that your needs should be met by the government but a liberals needs should not be met by the government.

If you want an army maybe you should ask for people to arm themselves to protect you and yours. I don't like guns though. I won't support you in that, which is why you want to throw people like me in jail or have me shot, if I try to resist or escape.

It looks like a despot has already moved in. Your government does not play nice. Cops shoot non-violent people all the time. IF you don't pay your government protection money (taxes) they will turn their guns on you.

You are naive to think that the police would not shoot you like a dog in the street if you drive with out paying them off or begging permission with a license. You place a badge on your car so your police will leave you alone.

"I sure like being able to walk outside without the fear of foreign invaders shooting me like a dog in the street."

Are you also afraid of the dark?

Another thing liberals already have government pay for is Radio. NPR is notoriously liberal,

Notoriously Conservative said...

That is true. NPR is all liberal, all the time. Yet the liberals argue that conservatives have unfair control of radio airwaves, when they have publicly paid for airtime, 24/7

This world will never survive with conservative (aka moral) values; even more, America leans toward ultraconservative. The problem is there are so many ethnic values and races, that conservative values, and the values of all other religions clashing, cause war, hate, racism, etc.

Nothing is easy about accepting the differences of other races and religions, and trying to mesh them so we can get along. Your an idiot. To say that its "easy" is the dumbest thing I ever heard.

Its "easier" to set values, and discriminate because of them... aka conservative. You disguise that discrimination in words like "right" and "moral" and "biblical". In short, you will never own up to the fact that you do discriminate, that you are racist, and you'll never know it because you've been brain washed to think that its "morals"... in fact, you can't even understand what those words really mean, because if you did, you'd be liberal.

Anonymous said...

So notoriously conservative, you think that if the government does not get involved, people will. You think the rich will help out the poor and that you need a little government, your living in a fantasy world where people are nice to each other. In places like america the poor get discriminated for being poor and the rich get benefits from being rich. Just look at Your Health System. Privatized, you think private insurance companies give people health care if they cant afford it haha!! dont make me laugh. At least i live in a country(Britain) where a state-institution(NHS) garantees me health care provision no matter what class i am or whether i can afford it. So i actually like government provided health care. I was diagonised with Aspergers Syndrome and in america i would not be able to get health insurance because of my 'condition' in england they dont discriminate based on money or disability the government provides for you no matter where you come from or what 'condition' you got. So yeah slave trade has ended thanks to 'decent people' but these 'decent people' now discriminate on the basis of money and whether you have a 'condition' or not

My question for some of you conservatives is: why don't you believe in global warming and what is so bad about it?

Thank you for the opportunity to post and look forward to your answers.

Notorious Nick said...

There are many, many reasons we don't believe in global warming. Perhaps first and foremost is that the science behind it is very, very shaky, to put it lightly. The majority of the "science" is based on computer models of future weather patterns. If my weather man can't predict whether or not it will rain tomorrow, how can they know what the temperature will be in 100 years.

As far as what is bad about it; it shapes government policy and law, and costs billions and billions of dollars, fighting something that does not exist.

This is obviously not an eloquent explanation, but you can find many more answers to your question on this website. Just do a search for global warming.

Blake said...

Notorious Nick - Don't shoot yourself short on what you said about "global warming" it was good info. Global warming is simply a political tactic started by Al Gore and used by liberals to gain support, political status, votes, the "popular" ideal of what is right, and MONEY. But is all reality there has been recent evidence that the information is falicious, or false. The hockey stick graph predicts the rise in temperature. but in all actualality, it doesn't matter what numbers you put in the equation, it will always form a positive slope for global warming. Anonymous and roadkill you are not worth they effort or thought. Unfortunately you are indoctrinated and will never understand how like minded conservatives think. You will never be comfortable that your nation knows what is best as a People. Because you are always confused about where you stand. The fact is, you don't stand. You stand for nothing except discontent and drama. Ask any real person, ask any real American..And maybe, just maybe, they will have the patience to enlighten you through God And Country. God and Country equals love and happiness.

I'm blown away by mostly the liberal posts trying to destroy this forum. I think you all are very immature. BTW, our healthcare system isn't necessarily "PRIVATIZED". I guess the housing market is very "PRIVATIZED" too...(See Fannie and Freddie). I'm glad at least our retirement is 'PRIVATIZED'..OH, my bad, I forgot all about Social Security (See Solvent Government entity). I know we can count on the Academic Liberal Elite Academic crew to tell us why we all need these programs. I am so thankful for all their terrific, well-funded programs! I am way too stupid as a common folk conservative to ever obtain these services on my own. Then again, I did put myself through school, pay my family's health insurance every month, sick or not, and operate a very successful small business. While not the rich person you are referring to, I do about 250 hours of community out-reach and donate roughly $10000 in services to my community annually. Some of the liberals posting here need to grow up, and move on. The Liberals in this forum are accusing conservatives of things that liberals are becoming known for, Stereotyping and then oppressing the people who may be in opposition to their point of view, or people who are just different than them. I know in my public school, we were taught tolerance and uniqueness.

Since when did the left miss history class? Would someone on the left please explain to this uneducated hill-billy conservative something. When did socialism and communism become such 'Progressive' ideas. Haven't they been around awhile? What success have they had? Socialism has been great for Greece. The Chinese are doing an amazing job with communism, but I don't know if the Left can persuade 50% of the US population to work in rice fields.

I am pretty liberal, but not because its easier just because I choose to accept other peoples different beliefs because I do not think they are above my own. I do believe in right and wrong and am not a liberal who is for abortion. I do think that the big mistake made by conservatives in the arguement against big government, is that they only want small government fiscally but they are for government to tread on social issues. I am not going to attack your view because you are entitiled to your own opinion and I respect it and think you have valid points. Except in saying being liberal is easier, no you must have tolerance which is hard for a lot of people, and that liberals don't believe that their is wrong, I believe in right and wrong and I have morals. We just have different political ideologies.
